Transformer Basics
A transformer is an electrical device that transfers energy between two circuits through electromagnetic induction. It consists of two coils (primary and secondary windings) wrapped around a common magnetic core.
Transformers can step voltage up or down while maintaining power (minus losses). The relationship between primary and secondary voltage is determined by the turns ratio.
Turns Ratio Formula
- V1/V2 = N1/N2
- Where V1 = primary voltage, V2 = secondary voltage
- N1 = primary turns, N2 = secondary turns
- Turns ratio = N1/N2
