What is Relative Risk?

Relative risk (RR) is a measure used in epidemiology to compare the risk of an outcome between two groups - those exposed to a factor and those not exposed. RR = (Risk in exposed) / (Risk in unexposed). An RR > 1 indicates increased risk, RR = 1 indicates no association, and RR < 1 indicates decreased risk (protective effect).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you interpret relative risk?
RR > 1 means exposure increases risk. RR = 1 means no association. RR < 1 means exposure decreases risk (protective). For example, RR = 2.0 means exposed group has twice the risk of the unexposed group.
