Simplifying fractions

To reduce a fraction, divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). The GCD is the largest whole number that divides both values without leaving a remainder.

Example

18/24 → GCD(18, 24) = 6 → 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4, so the simplified fraction is 3/4.

Mixed numbers and classification

When the numerator is larger than the denominator, the fraction is "improper" and can be rewritten as a mixed number: divide to find the whole number part and keep the remainder over the original denominator.

  • Proper fraction: numerator < denominator
  • Improper fraction: numerator > denominator
  • Whole number: numerator = denominator
